H1N1 Vaccine may not be right for pregnant women

To vaccinate or not to vaccinate – that is the question.

This week, we’re going to jump further into the controversial H1N1 vaccination, specifically when it comes to pregnant women and how the lack of knowledge is dangerous and perhaps deadly.

Even though it’s been many months since the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) put children and pregnant women at the top of their priority list for getting the H1N1 vaccine, the controversy continues to grow.

In fact, the vaccine was released with very little clinical testing, and absolutely none on pregnant women. Imagine that! Then, in a shoot first, ask questions later move, the National Institutes of Health and vaccine manufacturers began seeking pregnant volunteers for several H1N1 vaccine safety trials. Meanwhile, many women who believe that this vaccine caused them to lose their babies are forming support groups and blogs to record their experiences, with the intent of warning others not to get the vaccine. But in reality, pregnant women should not be getting any vaccines.

It’s not that I’m anti vaccine. I’m just pro vaccine-safety. That's safety, as in making sure that anything injected into your body has been tested and shown to be safe before it's put on the market. That’s safety, as in when it comes to children, we should be especially vigilant in making sure that extensive clinical trials have proven a particular vaccine is unequivocally safe before it's given to a child – including a child in the womb of a pregnant woman. Unfortunately – and tragically for some – the CDC and the FDA don't necessarily think the same way.

It was bad enough that bloggers around the U.S.and newspaper reports in Great Britain began reporting miscarriages, stillbirths and other ill effects in mothers and their babies almost as soon as the H1N1 vaccination campaign started. Since then, according to the H1N1 summary report, more than 9,000 adverse reactions of all sorts were reported through January 2010, including 46 deaths. Some of those reports are of miscarriages, which have been tallied by a group of women who have formed a support group for women who believe the vaccine caused them to lose their babies.

I’m sorry to say the governments not doing much to help it’s own case. If you go to the government's website on clinical trials, you’ll see that at least one vaccine manufacturer is still recruiting pregnant volunteers for testing the safety and efficacy of the H1N1 vaccine. First, I have serious concerns about conducting any kind of pharmaceutical testing on pregnant women. But the sad thing about this testing is that it didn't start until months after the CDC ordered women and their unborn babies to the head of the H1N1 vaccine line!

As previously reported, this vaccine was NEVER tested in pregnant women – until now. That's because, when it comes to "emergencies" such as pandemics, certain things like clinical trials can be dismissed in order to speed up the delivery of what officials define as life-saving drugs. In other words, making H1N1 an emergency gave officials the right to shoot first, and ask questions later, when it came to safety trials for this vaccine.

One place that many women logically search when they're looking for information on how to have a healthy pregnancy and baby is the CDC's own website. There, under "Birth Defects: Having a Healthy Pregnancy," the CDC lists the ABC's of pregnancy tips for ensuring nothing bad happens to your baby while you're pregnant.

I find it interesting, if not ironic, that the "A" of the ABC's is Avoid exposure to toxic substances and chemicals – such as cleaning solvents, lead and mercury, some insecticides, and paint. Pregnant women should avoid exposure to paint fumes.

The "C" is Cigarette smoking, which can cause major health problems for both mother and child, from birth defects, to premature delivery, to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), and more.

The "L" of the ABC's is for legal drugs such as alcohol – which has no known safety level – and caffeine, which can be found in many over-the-counter drugs, off-the-shelf foods and in beverages besides coffee and tea.

So – if you're pregnant, the CDC advises you to avoid smoking, alcohol, caffeinated food, drugs, paint fumes, pesticides, and other environmental toxins that you might breathe, ingest or even absorb through your skin.

Under "V," the CDC does say that vaccines are a "very important concern" during pregnancy. A "non-working" hyperlink directs you to what is supposed to be the CDC's website on getting vaccines during pregnancy. No luck there. But if you do your own search through Google, there’s a website where you'll find which vaccines the CDC recommends for pregnant women, and which ones they don't.

For example, the measles shot is a no-no. So is the live flu virus. But the regular flu shot is recommended, even though studies have shown that flu vaccinations don't make a bit of difference in whether a pregnant woman is going to get sick with the flu or not. The point is that the CDC goes to great lengths in spelling out the ABC's of protecting an unborn baby from all kinds of toxic substances – except those in vaccines.

What the CDC isn't bothering to tell is that one reason no evidence of risk exists is because several vaccines, including the ones for the flu, have never actually had any clinical trials done on pregnant women; until now.

Before Novartis and the other manufacturers started their flu vaccine clinical trials for pregnant women this fall, all they had was the public health experiments called post-marketing surveillances. Right now, the only information we have about flu vaccines and pregnancy is the post-marketing surveillance reports which, as I already said, show that some women have been reporting miscarriages after a flu vaccine, whether it's seasonal or H1N1.

The tragic thing about this is that many of these women have physicians who refused to even consider the possibility of the vaccine causing harm to them or their babies.

What’s really distressing to me, though, is that so many physicians, as well as the mainstream media, steadfastly ignore compelling research that shows that flu vaccines have no effect on whether pregnant women get sick with the flu or influenza-like illnesses – meaning it's not necessary to even give pregnant women flu vaccines in the first place!

Fibromyalgia Relief

Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain disorder that affects millions of Americans each year and can be both physically and emotionally distressful. Fibromyalgia sufferers experience widespread chronic muscle pain, but localized pain in a series of tender points is another classic symptom.

Recently, fibromyalgia patients have been seeking chiropractic care increasingly often. Because fibromyalgia causes numerous tender points all over the body, many fibromyalgia patients suffer from back pain, neck pain and leg cramps. In an attempt to solve these problems, many sufferers have looked to chiropractors. Because simple adjustments to the neck and spine can restore the carriage of the whole body, a lot of fibromyalgia sufferers find that alignments of the spine can significantly reduce pain all over their bodies.

Many fibromyalgia patients suffer from a condition called upper cervical spinal stenosis. This causes the coverings of the upper spine, known as meninges, to become compressed. This can cause severe, debilitating pain all over the body. Chiropractors can adjust the head and neck so the spine is no longer compressed, helping to relieve the widespread pain symptoms of fibromyalgia.

Numerous studies have been conducted analyzing the benefits of chiropractic care in fibromyalgia patients. A research study asked 81 fibromyalgia patients to indicate drug or alternative treatments that best relieved their pain. Chiropractic care treatment scored surprisingly high in this study. Another study examined the effectiveness of spinal manipulation in relieving fibromyalgia symptoms. After just 15 treatments, fibromyalgia patients suffered from less pain and fatigue, and actually enjoyed better sleep quality.

It's Summer Exercise Time for Kids

With so much publicity about obesity in the US, particularly among children, we're going to discuss what your kids can do this summer to get healthier.

In order to live a well-rounded, healthy lifestyle, physical activity should be incorporated into your child's daily activities. Exercise helps our bodies to reach peak performance and is known to reduce health risks like cardiovascular problems. Exercise also aides in building overall strength, bone density, healthy joints and muscles, all while helping maintain a healthy weight.

In addition, exercise has also been shown to help in other ways as well. Children who get the appropriate amount of daily exercise also enjoy the ability to sleep better as well as reduce stress levels.

Studies by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) have revealed that the majority of children should be getting approximately an hour of physical activity basically every day. The activity itself isn't as important as making sure it hits on the three criteria of healthy exercise:-- strength, endurance and flexibility.

First, let's discuss 2-3 year olds. At this age, toddlers are developing their motor skills, such as running and throwing. Children at this age have energy to spare for physical activity, so they can benefit from up to 1 1/2 hours of daily exercise. A good exercise plan is to allow them an hour of unstructured activity that is something they're conducting as well as a half hour of structured exercise time.

Recommended exercises for this age group include traditional games like tag and leap frog as well as activities that include age appropriate toys. Even a trip to the park is an easy way to get in an hour of exercise with your child.

By time your child is 4-5 years old, they have developed their motor skills enough to control the basics. At this stage they are working on further improving balance and increasing their physical skill set.

Though an hour is the minimum required amount of physical activity in this age group up to two hours of exercise is beneficial. The exercise should be split between an hour of structured activity that you plan and an hour of unstructured activity that the child is able to decide on.

At this age, focus on activities that help them work on their balance and hand-eye coordination like catch or gymnastics. Depending on your child's physical abilities and comfort level more involved exercises like learning to swim or ride a bike is also an option. At 4-5 years old is also when your child can start participating in smaller scale sports centered activities. However, you should try to limit the number of people involved and only focus on the basics of the game.

During the ages 6-12, it's important to start really laying the groundwork for healthy exercise habits. This is the time when kids can really start becoming more involved with the decisions they make in regards to exercise. This is also when many children start participating in organized sports teams.

For this group, an hour of exercise is the required minimum. This is when you can help your child really develop a fitness routine with team sports that meet a few times a week as well as activities they can do regularly at home. There's also the option of enrolling them in activities like a yoga class, rock climbing or even a kid-friendly gym.

During the teen years, this could possibly be the most vital time for your child to keep up daily physical activity. That's because as kids get older, the amount of exercise they get drops, starting at age 13 for girls and 15 for boys. In addition to health benefits, such as weight management, physical activity can increase self esteem and a positive self image among this age group which is also very important.

Again an hour of exercise is recommended for young adults 13-18 years old. At this age, participating in team sports is still a great option and a natural choice for kids who've been participating in them already. However, teens tend to drop out of these sports so your encouragement can be a big help. It's important to let them choose the activity that they want to do as they are definitely flexing their independent thought muscles at this age. Another good idea is to have your child plan group activities with friends. This way they can still get in their social time, which is part of the reasons exercise drops off in this age group.

The million dollar question is how we get buy in from the kids. Ultimately your child's activity level is up to them. However, you can encourage them to get enough exercise easily. It just takes making a few changes to see a real difference. Children are going to be influenced by the adults around them. That's why it's so important that parents set a good example. If you aren't getting enough exercise it will be hard to explain to a child why they need to keep up their physical activity. Start making changes in your own workout regimen and not only will you improve the chances of your child getting active to stay healthy, but you as well will feel the health benefits.

A perfect way to implement the prior point is to plan physical activities that you and your child can do together. Not only will this give you quality time together but it will give you both a chance to get your heart pumping. It's also sometimes easier to stick with it if there's someone else to hold you accountable and enjoy the activity with.

Exercise for kids doesn.t have to feel like exercise. By choosing activities that are fun, getting your child moving won't be as much of a struggle and the duration of activity will likely last longer. Also try to incorporate activities that are new. This will keep your child mentally involved as they learn something new and broaden their perspective on what can considered be exercise.

And guess what.Television is not a sport or physical activity. We call these sedentary activities, activities that require very little exertion and aren't considered exercise. Things like watching television and playing video games fall into this category. So to improve your child's chances of getting the daily physical activity they need you must reduce these activities. The easiest way to do so is to eliminate or limit the temptation by not having these electronics around or easily accessible. Definitely avoid putting a television in your child's room. Also set limits on the amount of time your child is allowed to take part in these sedentary activities. It might be tough on the child at first but in the long run they'll be able to cope with a better balance in their activities.

Just like with our nutrition, the exercise habits we create when we're young are usually carried over into our adult life. So get your kids moving now to keep them healthy well into future.

Frozen Shoulder can be painful without proper treatment

Today, we going to discuss something called "frozen shoulder," something that few people have heard about unless you’ve experienced it. But if you've had frozen shoulder or know some who has, you know it can be very debilitating.

A frozen shoulder is a shoulder joint with significant loss of its range of motion in all directions. The range of motion is limited not only when the patient attempts motion, but also when someone attempts to move the joint fully while the patient relaxes. A frozen shoulder is also referred to as “adhesive capsulitis.” It actually affects more than 9 million people annually – about 2 percent of the population.

Ask a dozen people what causes frozen shoulder and you will probably get a dozen answers. They could all be both right and wrong at the same time. Meaning that what caused the condition in one person may not be the same cause in another person.
 
Some of the various suspected instigators of this disease are previous injury to the general shoulder area, Hormonal imbalances, especially in the thyroid gland, Repetitive motion or strain without proper stretching and rest, Frozen shoulder is the result of inflammation, scarring, thickening, and shrinkage of the capsule that surrounds the normal shoulder joint. Any injury to the shoulder can lead to frozen shoulder, including tendinitis, bursitis, and rotator cuff injury. Frozen shoulders occur more frequently in patients with diabetes, chronic inflammatory arthritis of the shoulder, or after chest or breast surgery. Long-term immobility of the shoulder joint can put people at risk to develop a frozen shoulder. There are more, but you get the idea.

Earlier, I stated that frozen shoulder pain is one of the most common shoulder conditions and one of the most disabling. It owes its name to the fact that the sufferer has the affected shoulder range of motion severely limited. Typically the person affected has trouble reaching up for cupboards, shampooing, steering the car wheel and so on. This is made even worse by the long recovery times to regain full range and mobility.
 
While the cause of frozen shoulder pain is largely debated among various health professionals and lay people, there is agreement of the progression.
  • Stage one: A freezing phase; Symptoms being acute pain, tending to be worse at night making sleep hard if not impossible. Range of motion has not yet become restricted much, if at all.
  • Stage two: A frozen phase; Symptoms being lowering pain levels but with your range of motion becoming severely limited. Most people find this to be the hardest phase to cope with.
  • Stage three: A thawing phase; Symptoms being as the name implies, a gradual diminishing of the remaining pain along with a freeing up of movement again.
Before we discuss treatment; it’s very important for people with a frozen shoulder to avoid reinjuring the shoulder tissues during the rehabilitation period. These individuals should avoid sudden, jerking motions of or heavy lifting with the affected shoulder.

Now to treatment. We have had tremendous success with Graston Technique.
